SUMMER PROJECT

Analysis of ANT-MAN

The movie i will be analysing is called The ANT-MAN. The genre of ANT-MAN is science-fiction and action. The reason for my opinion is due to the fact that the characters such as ANT-MAN himself is shown to be reduced to a size which is beyond possible in real life. The movie is based around action as violence and enemies are made throughout. As the move proceeds quite a few fights occur and mysterious situations appear. Additionally, alongside all the fight scenes, there are a few characters which questions whether the movie is actually all action or comedy too. The sarcasm in a few characters who jump to conclusion, don't always stay to plan and make hilarious mistakes brings the comedy side to the movie alive. Overall, it's certain that the movie is revolved around violence between the two separated groups whom are unbeatable to their needs and wants.

What happens in the ANT-MAN?

Scott gets released from from robbing a house and gets picked up by his Mexican friend, Luis which is an illegal immigrant. They take Scott back to the house where there is his group, Dave and Kurt. When they get back to the house Luis tries to convince Scott to rob this house that everyone apparently said was loaded. Scott declines multiple times and says he is not robbing any more he has a child to set an example for. Luis does not give up yet though. Anyway, Scott goes out to look for a job so he can buy things for his child and get back on his feet but unfortunately nobody would take him because of his criminal record. So he gets a job at this restaurant without telling the boss he has a criminal record. its all good until the boss finds out and Scott gets fired.

Then its his little daughters birthday and Scott decides to go to his ex wives house and pay his daughter a visit with a gift. When he arrives he hugs his daughter and gives her the gift but his ex comes with her new husband and kicks him out and says Scott doesn't have the right of the law to be here and that he needs to get a job. Poor Scott is back where he started at the house. Then he finally agrees to the robbery so he can get enough money to at least see his child and take her nice places. Because Scott has the skills he goes in the house and the rest of the groups are on guard. Scott gets through all the doors with his clever skills and when he opens the last door all there is lying there is a suit and a helmet. They are all disappointed.
Scott takes the suit without alerting anyone. when they get to the house Scott puts the suit on and presses a button on the suit which magically shrinks him into a size of an ant. The man who owns the suit tells him he was looking for someone like Scott that could break through all these doors and Scott says no I don't want to do this. So the name who owns the suit, Hank gets him in jail and gives him a choice. stay in jail or join him. and Scott chooses to join him. so Scott puts on the suit and escapes from the bars of jail because he shrinks to a small size that  people can hardly see. Then he wakes up finding himself in a bed tucked in with pyjamas. he gets out of bed and gets out of the room. He sees Hank waiting for him at the table. Scott sits down to talk with Hank. They talk about what Hank wants him to do and what the suit can do. The suit can shrink into a size small as an ant and has super strength. Hank has a daughter to train Scott for what he has to do. The plan is to stop the new boss of hanks old company from creating a shrinking suit like the one Hank has. Hank wants to stop him because it could cause big problems in the world which is not safe or good. So they train Scott till he is strong enough and understands the suit to defeat The villain. At the end Scott beats the villain with a whole load of action: laser shooting, shrinking fighting.

How is the setting linked to the science fiction genre?

The setting is linked to the science fiction genre only slightly. Its not really the setting that tells me its science fiction, its the accessories and invention like: the suit and helmet, shrinking, flying, controlling ants, riding insects, villains. I'm not sure if the setting is really science fiction though.

How are the characters linked to the science fiction genre?

I only spotted one character that is linked to the science fiction genre. There is the character that is a villain in the movie which is science fiction a little. The rest are normal people with cool science fiction inventions that are unreal. The movie is mostly shown to be science fiction because of the gadgets and a bit of background.

What narrative themes are linked to the genre?

The narrative in ANT-MAN is really a superhero type of movie. I know this because in the movie there is a villain and to beat the villain there is a hero. Thats what the movie is about mostly.

Textual Analysis: Science Fiction

Genre
The Maze Runner (2014) fits into a dystopia and adventure thriller sub-genres of the sci-fi genre. Its an adventure thriller because there are lots of teens and they do not know where they are. There is also a maze which is an adventure and mysterious. Its dystopia because its an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad and that is the definition on dystopia.   the maze runner

Key Conventions

There are a huge number of sci-fi key conventions present in the trailer. There are monsters trying to attack the teens and it takes place in a big CGI maze. There were lasers, guns and weapons which we would expect in a sci-fi film. There are mostly male roles so I think it would attract male teens.

Audience

The film is aimed at teenagers because there are a group of
teenagers as the characters. Most teens like to watch action
and a little violence that's why it would attract teens. The
limit is PG-13 because little kids are too young to see
weapons and monsters. So the age limit is at a normal teens
age.

Lucy

Genre

Lucy (2014) fits into a action film and thriller of the sub genres of the sci-fi genre. It also comes under the genre science because the girl Lucy has drugs inside of her which makes her inadvisable and she can do so much new things to do with science. Its an action film because Lucy is a very violent person after she got the drugs inside of her and she can kill people with her powers she has.

Key Conventions

There are a huge number of sci-fi key conventions in present in the trailer. There are special powers she has developed after the drugs leaked in her body. She can turn into different people and she can almost do anything. In the movie she is like a robot because the drugs have really effected her and all the things that make her human are fading away. Lastly she can time travel and read peoples minds.

Audience

The film is aimed at about like people that are older teens because it has a lot of violence and action in it. I think the movie is a unisex film because it has a female playing the main role (Lucy) and most males like violence and action. The age limit is 16 or over.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Genre

Jupiter Ascending (2015) fits into a action film and adventure film of the sub genres of the sci-fi genre. Its an action film because it has monsters and evil people trying to kill a girl which is special. its an adventure film because they all go off into space and earth. There are two planets its set in.

Key Conventions

There are a huge number of sci-fi key conventions in present in the trailer. Its set in space and it has space ships in the movie. There are monsters that do not feel pain and will kill anyone who gets in the way. There are flying devices that look kind of like skateboards. Lastly there are lots of weapons which are common in a lot of sci-fi films.

Audience

The film is aimed at teens because there are lots of violence, action and mystery in it. I think the movie is appealing to both genders because the main person is a female and the action and violence would appeal to men.

Why I chose media

Why did you choose GCSE Media Studies?

I chose GCSE media studies because my sister has just recently finished media studies and when she was doing it, it looked fun and easy. She also told me I should do it. I also chose it because I wanted to try something different and I like editing and making videos with people it sounds and looks fun.

Which part of the course are you looking forward to most?
I'm looking forward to making the music video and trailer. Mostly the music video because you can pick your own music and I love listening to music. Also, making videos is really fun and its dramatic which is why I like it.

What knowledge and skills do you hope to learn in Media?
I hope to learn new editing skills and acting skills. I also hope to learn how all of this works how to make an actual trailer and music video. Its so interesting and I want to be able to know how to do it.

What grade are you realistically hoping to achieve in Media?
I am hoping to get about A-C. I am confident about getting a high level because my sister got an A* for hers and I was watching how she was doing it. It looks really easy and she told me it was so I don't think i'm that scared about grades.

What was the last TV programme or film you watched?
The last TV programme I watched was The Vampire Diaries and the last film I watched was The Dictator
